Description: The City of Austin Downtown Wastewater Tunnel Project consisted of an approximate 18,600-foot long, large-bore tunnel constructed just south of downtown Austin, extending from west of Lamar Boulevard to the existing Govalle Tunnel, located at the Kreig Softball Fields complex in southeast Austin. The tunnel alignment closely parallels the Colorado River/ Lady Bird Lake and crosses beneath the lake a few times. A H Beck was contracted to provide design/build secant pile shoring for four, 28-foot inside diameter tunnel access shafts facilitating the construction and for future maintenance purposes. The granular Lower Colorado River Terrace deposits were in direct communication with the lake causing high groundwater conditions for the close proximity shafts. A sectional full-length core barrel system was utilized to maintain shaft verticality, seal and socket into the underlying bedrock for virtually no seepage. A H Beck was contracted and completed the secant pile access shafts in 2010.
