Location : San Antonio, Texas
Description : Due to some combination of the site’s Kelly AFB past land use, 30-foot deep environmental clean-up, encapsulating subsurface shotcrete wall overlying a slurry cutoff wall, shallow groundwater, subsurface drainage obstructions and a large diameter deep storm drain failure, some areas of the subject parking lot subsided up to 4 feet. Previous attempts for relatively superficial bridging and repavement remediation had failed. A H Beck proposed to provide design-build soil-cement ground improvement columns overlain by geogrid reinforced, compacted aggregate base load-transfer platforms to support the proposed reconstructed flexible pavements. The subject soil-cement columns were sampled and strength tested for conformance with design assumptions. The columns were constructed ahead of schedule and the client and owner were happy with the results.
