Description: Sandow Unit 4 Environmental Retrofit Program was under a tight schedule to meet state and federal regulations. Included in BECK’s contract was a design and build shoring wall to protect the operating and sensitive ID fans and sustain a substructure work area for installation of 308 drilled caissons. The shoring wall designed by BECK was composed of 118 - 18-inch diameter tangent piles 26 feet deep constructed under as little as 11 feet of head room. The main SCR foundations consisted of 308 - 24 inch diameter drilled shafts up to 65 feet deep all constructed in an 8 foot deep excavation inside the operating plant using bentonite slurry and the slurry displaced method. Twenty percent of these shafts had to be constructed under as little as 13 feet of head room. Due to the engineers requirement for Type V Cement on the project and the limited availability of this cement type, BECK produced all of the concrete used in the foundations onsite utilizing volumetric mixers.
